Berserk Cosplay Guide — Building Guts' Complete Look

Why Guts Is One of the Greatest Cosplay Characters Ever

Guts from Berserk is not a subtle character. He's a man who carries a sword the size of a door, wears armor that looks like it was forged in nightmares, and somehow manages to look both terrifying and tragic at the same time. As a cosplay, he's a statement. Nobody glances at a well-done Guts build and moves on — they stop, they take a photo, and they ask you about it.

At Lone Star Cosplay, Guts builds are among our most involved projects. Here's everything you need to know to pull off the complete look.

The Centrepiece: The Dragonslayer

Let's start with the most important part. The Dragonslayer is the heart of any Guts cosplay, and getting it right is what separates a recognizable cosplay from an unforgettable one.

The sword is canonically described as a massive slab of iron that isn't really a sword — it's too large, too heavy, and too blunt to be used the way a sword should be. That's why it works. Its sheer size is a character statement. We make the Dragonslayer in three sizes: 121cm, 151cm, and 182cm. For a full Guts cosplay, we strongly recommend 151cm as the minimum — the 182cm version is truly massive and will require some planning to transport, but the impact at a convention is extraordinary.

Both the standalone Dragonslayer and the Elden Ring-inspired version are available in our shop.

Option 1: Classic Guts (Black Swordsman Arc)

The Black Swordsman look is the most recognizable version of Guts — black cape, black armor, the cannon arm, the crossbow mounted on the arm, and the Dragonslayer. It's the version most casual Berserk fans will immediately recognize.

What you need:

  • Dragonslayer (151cm or 182cm)
  • Black bodysuit or black leather outfit as a base
  • Black cape
  • Black left arm armor (DIY or commissionable separately)
  • Arm cannon prop (optional but impressive)
  • Eye patch (for the later arcs)

Option 2: Berserker Armor Guts

This is the pinnacle. The Berserker Armor is one of the most visually spectacular armor designs in all of anime and manga — jagged, dark, with the iconic beast skull helmet and flowing black energy aesthetic. It's significantly more work than the Black Swordsman look, but it's also significantly more jaw-dropping.

We make the full wearable Guts Berserker Armor suit, which includes all armor pieces made to your body measurements. Like our other full armor suits, it comes in Painted/Ready-to-Wear, Unpainted/Strapped, Unpainted/Unstrapped, and DIY Kit tiers.

What you need:

  • Full Guts Berserker Armor Suit (from our shop)
  • Dragonslayer (the 182cm version pairs perfectly with full armor)
  • Black bodysuit underneath
  • Dark, tattered fabric accents for the cape or trailing fabric effect

The Elden Ring Connection

One of the most interesting things about Guts' Dragonslayer in the modern cosplay world is its relationship with Elden Ring. Hidetaka Miyazaki has been open about Berserk's influence on FromSoftware games, and the Dragonslayer (or something very close to it) appears in Elden Ring. This means a Guts cosplay with the Dragonslayer resonates with both Berserk fans and Elden Ring players — which is a huge combined audience at any gaming convention.

We offer both the original Berserk-accurate Dragonslayer and the Elden Ring-inspired version for exactly this reason.

Tips for Building Guts

  • Scale the sword to your height. The Dragonslayer should look proportional to your character. For most people, 151cm is the sweet spot — it looks impressively large without being unmanageable. If you're tall, go 182cm.
  • Weather everything heavily. Guts is not a clean character. His sword is covered in nicks, his armor is battered, his cloak is torn. The more worn and used everything looks, the more accurate it is.
  • The pose makes the photo. Practice Guts' iconic poses before the convention. Over the shoulder carry, two-handed grip on the hilt, single-hand drag — these are the poses that get shared online.
  • Consider the full armor for conventions where you'll be standing. The Berserker Armor is most impressive when you can stand in it for photos. If you're going to be seated at panels or spending a lot of time sitting, consider whether the full suit is practical for that specific event.

Berserk cosplay has seen a massive resurgence in recent years, both because of the manga's ongoing legacy and because of Elden Ring's direct nods to the series. There's never been a better time to do a Guts build. If you have questions about our armor or sword options, reach out — we're big Berserk fans and we love talking through these builds.
