The Most Common Question We Get
When customers land on one of our product pages for the first time, one of the first things they notice is the variant options: Painted, Unpainted, and sometimes a DIY Kit. And the most common question that follows is: which one should I get?
It's a fair question. The answer depends on your budget, your skill level, your timeline, and what you're planning to do with the prop. Let's walk through everything you need to know.
What Does 'Painted' Mean?
A painted prop from Lone Star Cosplay has been fully finished by hand before it ships to you. That means it's been sanded, primed, base-coated, detailed, weathered, and sealed. It's ready to display or wear straight out of the box — no extra work needed on your end.
We paint every prop by hand to match the in-game or on-screen reference as closely as possible. That means adding wear marks, battle damage, metallic sheens, color gradients — all done with brushes and airbrush, by eye. It's time-intensive work, which is why painted props are priced higher. But what you receive is a true convention-ready piece.
What Does 'Unpainted' Mean?
An unpainted prop has been fully 3D printed, cleaned, and assembled — but it hasn't been painted yet. The shape, the detail, the structure — all identical to the painted version. It just arrives in the raw filament color (usually grey, white, or black depending on the piece).
Unpainted props are popular with cosplayers who want to do their own finish. If you have a specific color scheme in mind, enjoy the creative process, or want to match an existing costume's exact shade, unpainted gives you that freedom. It also comes in at a lower price point, which is always a bonus.
When Should You Buy Painted?
- You have a convention coming up soon and don't have time to paint a prop yourself.
- You're new to cosplay and aren't confident in your painting skills yet. There's nothing worse than spending weeks on a build only to mess up the finish at the last step.
- You want screen-accurate results without having to research paint mixes and techniques. We've already done all of that for you.
- You just want it done. Not everyone has the time or desire to sit in a garage with a spray can. That's completely valid — and that's exactly what we're here for.
When Should You Buy Unpainted?
- You're an experienced painter who wants full creative control over the finish.
- You want a custom color scheme — maybe you're doing an alternate universe version, a personal variant, or a gender-swapped take on the character.
- You're on a tighter budget. Painting takes many hours of skilled labor, so unpainted props are always more affordable.
- You enjoy the build process. There's a genuine sense of accomplishment in finishing your own prop from scratch.
What About DIY Kits?
For our full armor suits and some helmets, we also offer DIY kits. These come with all the 3D printed parts, raw and unassembled. You'll need to clean up the print lines, glue pieces together, apply body filler, sand, prime, and paint. It's the full hobbyist experience — and for people who love the craft, it's incredibly rewarding. It's also the most budget-friendly option for something like a full Halo Spartan armor or Doom Slayer suit.
Our Honest Recommendation
If you're ordering for a specific event, or if this is one of your first cosplay props, go painted. The price difference is worth the peace of mind. If you're a builder at heart and you've painted props before, unpainted gives you the freedom to make the piece truly your own.
And if you're ever unsure, just reach out before you order. We're always happy to help you figure out the right option.
